EHSC@SPORTIME Pre School Camper FAQ

I am Danielle Marshall, the Preschool Camp Director, and I’m looking forward to another great summer! Our wonderful team of teachers, counselors, coaches and tennis pros are excited to spend the summer with your children exploring, learning, and having fun!

Below are my answers to some “Frequently Asked Questions” from preschool parents. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

What is your background?
I was born and raised in East Hampton and I graduated from East Hampton High School and Siena College, receiving a B.A. in English and Spanish. I received my Masters in Early Childhood Education at Hunter College, and have been working with children for many years as a preschool teacher, swim instructor, ESL teacher, camp counselor, and coach. I am currently teaching kindergarten at Saint Ignatius Loyola School in New York City, and have been for the past 5 years. Throughout the past few years I have worked in a number of Preschools from East Hampton to NYC. I am dedicated to making this summer a fun, safe, and wonderful experience for your children by providing a great balance of sports, art, music, and other creative activities!

What will a typical day be like for my child?
The camp day begins at 8:45am, and daily schedules for each group are posted inside the camp house. Campers are divided into six groups, according to their age. Please let us know if your child wants to be with a friend. After checking in with their Head Counselor, campers have 10 minutes of organized free time (join the soccer game on the field; explore the playground or sand box; get involved in an art project; or read a book with one of our great counselors). Activities throughout the day include swimming, art, tennis, field games, playground, games in the gym, and lunch, with water breaks and snacks in the shade. Your child will also enjoy music time, dramatic play, and fun theme days. Preschool campers are dismissed at 1:30pm or 3:00pm if they are signed up for “extended day”. Please let us know ahead of time if your child is staying for the “extended day” program.

Do I need to send anything special to camp with my child?
Please send your child to camp wearing a bathing suit and sneakers (no open toed shoes). Campers should bring a towel, a hat, sun block (we will reapply sunblock throughout the day) and a junior tennis racket (available at the pro shop). *PLEASE MARK EVERYTHING WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME* We recommend storing a change of clothes at camp, and packing a zip-lock bag for wet bathing suits. If your child has swim goggles, we suggest you bring them. Some theme days involve dressing up for camp, so we will provide you with a theme day calendar and post reminders on the camp chalkboard.

What is the camper to counselor ratio?
We always maintain at least a 4:1 camper to counselor ratio for our preschool campers.  In addition to our counselors, there are several other adults who will be working with your children. They include: our Art teachers; our Aquatics Director with her team of lifeguards and WSI instructors; our wonderful tennis pros, and Camp Directors, Mark Crandall, Eric Scoppetta, and myself.

Can I stay with my child until he/she feels comfortable?
It is okay to stay for some transition time with your child, but don’t worry, our counselors are ready to receive your kids and engage them in great activities!  Your assistance and encouragement to get them involved is appreciated. We ask that all parents exit the preschool prior to the start of the first period (9:15 am) to allow for all children to start the day with their group and friends.

Who supervises swimming in the pool?
Our Aquatics Director Elise and her experienced team that includes three Water Safety Instructors and two lifeguards, who are always on duty.  Our counselors are required to be IN the pool with your children when they swim.

How does lunch work?
The preschool camp eats around 12:10pm.  Groups eat under the awning outside or inside our classroom.  Campers are welcome to pack their own lunch, but PLEASE NOTHING WITH NUTS!!!  If your child is bringing their own lunch or snack, we ask that it is in a bag with his/her name on it. Refrigeration is available. Snacks and water are provided throughout the day. There is also the option to order lunch through our cafe, Julias Corner. A link to sign up is sent weekly.

Does my child have to be potty-trained, and can he/she come to camp in a diaper if they aren’t 100% potty trained?
All preschoolers must be potty-trained. For health and safety reasons, we do not allow children to come to camp in a diaper, nor do we change children into a diaper during the day.  We recognize that preschoolers may have an occasional accident, but we have a “three-strike” policy.  If your child has three or more accidents, we may ask them to leave camp until they are potty-trained.

What about allergies? If my child has an EpiPen, what are your procedures?
If your child has allergies or dietary restrictions, please bring this to my attention prior to your child’s first day of camp. Also, make sure that you indicate all allergies and dietary restrictions on your camp paperwork. If your child has an EpiPen, please hand-deliver it to the Preschool Director along with a copy of the prescription. Throughout the day, your child’s head counselor will carry the EpiPen with them in a special bag, to ensure that it is always with your child’s group and properly stored. We also have a preschool “first aid cabinet,” where we keep all other necessary first aid supplies.

What if my child has behavioral issues or acts inappropriately at camp?
We train our counselors and provide them with strategies and techniques to prevent these incidents from occurring and handle them appropriately if they do. We also recognize that preschoolers are learning how to socialize, manage their emotions, and get along with others. So, if a camper misbehaves, we will certainly work with the child and his/her family to change their negative behavior and learn a valuable lesson. However, if a camper repeatedly misbehaves, is overly aggressive or acts in a manner that could compromise the safety and enjoyment of the other children (e.g. hitting, biting), their parents will be notified immediately, and the child may be asked to leave camp for the day or possibly the remainder of camp.

Can I pick my child up from camp early?
Absolutely! If you plan to pick up your child early, please let us know in advance so we can have your child ready for early dismissal. Please call Victoria at (631) 267-CAMP.

Dear EHSC@SPORTIME Amagansett 2025 Campers & Families:

Week 10 was a treat from start to finish, with cool breezes and even cooler camp activities! Our Ice Cream Social was a big hit, as always, when our older camp siblings visited the preschool camp to enjoy ice cream with their younger brothers and sisters.
